Programs: Health
WOHI collaborates with community leaders to tackle vital health issues such as Malaria, HIV/AIDS, Malnutrition. In April 2008, WOHI is launching a Nutrition program that will offer preschool children and after school students nourishing meals. Nutrition is one of several steps we are taking toward combatting Malaria, a disease that often strikes children under the age of 5.

HIV/AIDS Awareness Workshops

WOHI offers an HIV/AIDS awareness program for children and adults with the help of a local HIV/AIDS educator. HIV/AIDS workshops are provided for local leaders and people of the Samsam Odumase community who want to become HIV/AIDS educators. WOHI was able to offer these workshops with the help of Global Institute for Training (GIFT). The HIV/AIDS education program incorporates traditional methods of communication such as story telling, singing and drumming. In addition to this program, WOHI has produced its own socially and culturally appropriate HIV/AIDS brochure to help raise awareness for HIV/AIDS, as well as children's rights. Click on the HIV/AIDS brochure to see its contents.

Sports

WOHI uses its soccer program as a platform to train soccer players to become HIV/AIDS peer educators. This is achieved by requiring HIV/AIDS training prior to admission to the team, thereby combining Ghana's favorite past-time with HIV/AIDS awareness initiatives. The World of Hope Soccer Team is coached by our HIV/AIDS education instructor, Ben Okang. The popularity of the soccer program has expanded WOHI's HIV/AIDS awareness program to individuals who would have otherwise been difficult to access.

Malaria

Malaria is a very serious disease that West African individuals are all too familiar with. Taking preventative measures is our first step in protecting local children from developing this illness. Our Malaria program includes handing out Mosquito nets to all preschool children, ensuring that they are well nourished and that their immune system is strong enough to ward of ailments, while funding the Samsam Clinic which provides Malaria vaccinations and treatment for children who suffer from Malaria.

Malnutrition

Malnutrition has both health and educational consequences that hinder children from reaching their full potential in life. Children who are malnourished are at increased risk for contracting and developing acute and chronic diseases, including Malaria, a disease that often strikes children under the age of 5. In Sub Saharan Africa, malnutrition is a major public health issue. Studies conducted by United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition indicate that "malnutrition impairs intellectual potential" and that "good nutrition provided in early life of children is crucial for optimal growth and mental development." It is our belief that providing our students with a nutrition program will reduce the risk of illness and will improve learning.
